Review Boys Platform 2019

On Monday 18th March Dance Woking hosted its annual Boys Platform, giving boys from local schools the opportunity to take part in dance and perform at the Rhoda McGaw Theatre to their friends and family.

Four primary schools took part:

Horsell Junior School, Westfield Primary School, Kingfield Primary School & Leatherhead Trinity School.

The four primary schools who performed took part in our Science and Dance outreach project ‘What if..’ supported by the Ernest Cook Trust, Arts Council England’s project grants scheme and the schools themselves; in school we delivered a two hour programme of dance and science linked to the curriculum followed by eight one hour weekly sessions of dance in lunch or after school clubs.

Because of the way we are funded we were able to offer creative opportunities like this designed to encourage boys into dance, girls to take STEM subjects, increase fitness and introduce a new generation to live performance by seeing it and doing it.

The process:

Dr Hugh Mortimer introduces the year 5 class to the suns magnetic forces

The children explore magnetic  rules through dance movement with Gemma, Dance Woking Dance teacher and lead scientist Dr. Hugh Mortimer, STFC RAL Space

Professional dancer, Hannah from Alexander Whitley Dance Company discusses magnetic forces

The girls show the movement they have created to highlight magnetic properties

Team work – the children come together and choose a planet and discuss its properties

The children choose three properties and share them through dance movement

It’s all about the science and using movement to explore and explain it

Inspired by Alexander Whitley Dance Company’s piece 8 Minutes. Each boys group worked with a Dance Woking Artist: Kate Finegan, Gemma Cozens, Eleanor Dowling, Wesley Bingwa or Emily Neighbour over an 8 week period in an after school or lunchtime club to choreograph and create their piece.

What the audience said:

Very good and fantastic role models for the boys’

Good variety and being brave by relating it to science’

‘Young people definitely need to experience the arts first hand’

In context about Boys Platform: Watching – a total audience of 190 made up of 110 audience members and 80 boys* from seven schools across Woking and Surrey (*the boys were able to watch the half that they weren’t in); the boys were from primary and secondary schools and sixth form college; performing alongside them were two guest professional companies, showing short exerts of their current touring work, one of whom, Jack Philp, went to Woking College prior to taking his degree at Trinity Laban Conservatoire for Dance and Music in Contemporary Dance.

By bringing professional dance companies to our community platforms we aim to raise ambition, build and grow audiences and help create a sustainable dance economy by inspiring our young dancers and their supporters, showing potential progression routes and breaking down barriers to attendance.

At the platform we also had 5 work experience students, who wanted to gain an insight into managing events both front of house and backstage; two of whom were from local Secondary schools and three from University’s (Surrey & Chichester), alongside two volunteers.

Performing alongside Dance Woking’s Boys groups were several local guest groups: Zambesi Dance Company, Dark Matter Dance Company from Brackenhale School and soloist Ross Robertson from Havant & South Downs College. They performed their own choreography. It was truly inspiring to be able to watch such a wide range of age groups from primary school to college performing and seeing the progression.

The two professional Companies who joined the evening, Jack Philp Dance presented Entropy, performed by soloist Gaia Cicolani. It was great to have Jack’s piece as part of the platform.
Closing the platform was a duet performed by Alexander Whitley Dance Company dancers Robert Bridger and Hannah Ekholm, both of whom had worked on the What If Project and our Evolve our half term dance project. The dancers performed a stunning duet excerpt from 8 Minutes. Having professional companies perform at the Boys platform was really inspiring.

Alexander Whitley Dance Company comes to Woking

Thursday 21 March, Alexander Whitley Dance Company perform 8 Minutes at Rhoda McGaw Theatre, Woking, tickets available follow link: Tickets

A few interesting facts: Did you know?  The premiere of 8 Minutes at Sadler’s Wells in June 2017 had a sell out audience and was Alexander Whitley Dance Company’s debut on the main stage.

★★★★ The Guardian Whitley’s choreography establishes its own enriching animating narrative: the burnished pulsing duet that feels like the heartbeat of the universe, the languid, insouciant ensemble where the dancers look like a freebooting drift of cosmic matter.

Alexander Whitley may be familiar to our dance audiences, having performed with well-known companies such as Birmingham Royal Ballet, Rambert and Wayne McGregor | Random Dance. For 8 Minutes, he has brought together two leading artists to create a mesmerizing production: BAFTA Award-winning visual artist, Tal Rosner has shown work to critical acclaim in major art institutions such as The National Theatre, Royal Court Theatre and the Barbican Centre; Daniel Wohl is an established and highly-regarded composer and has received critical praise as one of his generation’s “imaginative, skilful creators” (New York Times). 8 Minutes has high production values including a large high-definition LED screen that projects Rosner’s stunning images created from actual scientific research photos and data.

Alexander Whitley Dance Company are delighted to present a duet from 8 Minutes, the critically acclaimed production, currently on tour.  In this unique collaboration with scientists from STFC RAL Space, choreographer Alexander Whitley takes inspiration from solar science research and its stunning imagery.  Igniting our imaginations with spectacular forces and overwhelming scales, space exploration constantly reshapes how we understand ourselves and our place in the universe. Dance, film and music take us on a journey to reveal the drama of the burning ball of plasma that illuminates our planet.  With an installation of high-definition imager and a specially created score , 8 Minutes captures our curiosity and wonder for this unimaginably vast subject.

Introducing… Boyz In Motion Dance Company!

Dance Woking would like to announce our third and final artist as Boyz In Motion Dance Company who will present work at our Introducing Dance Platform on Tuesday 19th March, 7pm for emerging artists and choreographers!

Boyz In Motion Dance Company is directed by Wesz Bingwa who is a graduate from University of De Montfort in Leicester and most recently gained an MA in Choreography from Trinity Laban Dance and Music Conservatoire.

The company will present their work Numbers, choreographed by Wesz Bingwa at the platform. The piece Numbers was built through a spoken-word poem written by the choreographer, talking about his experiences and life as a minority Black man from Zimbabwe to the UK. The Poem by the choreographer talks about race, indentity and judgement as a migrant in the UK.

The piece was placed onto the dancer whom comes from similar background of displacement- a Chinese Malaysian growing up away from her home soil, but in Hong Kong and UK.

Where do we stand? What do we stand for? How do we build our identity on home soil that is foreign or vice versa, on foreign soil that we hope to call home (at least for now?)
