Whats On This Spring…

Dance Woking is excited to announce its extensive Spring Shorts programme, featuring professional company James Wilton Dance. James Wilton is presenting his new work LEVIATHAN at Rhoda McGaw Theatre, Thursday 22nd March. Re-imagining Herman Melville’s novel, Moby Dick and featuring a cast of seven dancers, Wilton’s trademark blend of athletic dance, martial arts, capoeira and partner-work is sure to display an explosive performance.

Dance Woking’s youth group Evolve will perform the curtain raiser for LEVIATHAN. The piece will be created over three days this February Half Term with a company member from James Wilton Dance. Suitable for ages 12 years and older, Evolve is open to anyone with an interest in dance and is a fantastic opportunity to work and rehearse with a professional dance company.

Also inspired by James Wilton Dance is the education and outreach programme for Dance Woking’s annual Boys Only Platform Monday 19th March. Now in its fourth year, the Boys Platform aims to encourage more boys to get active and participate in dance. Dance Woking are very excited to be partnering Horsell Junior School, Westfield Primary School, Kings International College and Zambesi Dance Company and Wellington College. Sessions in schools & colleges started this week following a fantastic professional development session led by Michael Kelland from James Wilton Dance Company, with the aim to present choreography at the Boys Platform.

Woking SLAM is Dance Woking’s final platform for Spring Shorts this year on Saturday 24th March. Held annually at Rhoda McGaw Theatre, this community led platform showcases urban dance styles such as street, hip-hop, breaking to body popping. Featuring group’s #Fresh, #LilFresh and Tuffney Performing Arts Academy, with guest groups still to be announced, this is a line up not to be missed!

It’s all about the boys

Katherine Bett from ThatsSurreyTV came to see Dance Woking team at Ryden’s Hall, Old Woking Community Centre on Monday 29 January taking part in a CPD session led by Michael Kelland from James Wilton Dance Company.

Published on Jan 30, 2018

The stereotype is that dancing is graceful, artistic, and just for girls. And it’s a stereotype that can be difficult for teachers to overcome during dance lessons in school. Well, Dance Woking is trying to change all that. They’re putting on a series of outreach events in local schools that are just for boys. Katherine Bett went to a workshop where the outreach teachers were learning the style dance they’ll be teaching.

Boys Platform is on Monday 19 March at Rhoda McGaw Theatre

Evolve watch Scottish Dance Theatre company class

Dance Woking have been busy this half term with lots of opportunities to both take part and watch dance.

On Tuesday we a morning dance session with Gemma, called Activate, the 8-11 year olds learned some movement, how to improvise, played fun dance led games and put together a short piece of choreographed dance that they created.

This was followed by The Urban Play Ground Team, led by Alister & Miranda who put the performance parkour group Rotate through their paces – with some new technique to learn plus some devising and using scaffolding, we have a short film to share later this week.

On Wednesday & Thursday we have been hosting a 2 day dance intensive, we have based ourselves at HG Wells Conference & Events Centre in Woking; 13 dancers aged 12-20 years have been working with Scottish Dance Theatre; yesterday they worked with 3 company dancers as the Head of Education & learning. The standard of work they have produced is amazing;

The dancers have come from different dance schools around Woking & Surrey: Zambesi Dance Company, Jenny Reed School of Dance, Diamond Dance, Briar Dance Academy, Italia Conti Arts Academy. We welcome and encourage dancers who dance regularly at other dance schools to take up opportunities like this to come together and work with professional dance companies that are performing in Woking.

The two day intensive has given them the opportunity to experience what its like to work in a professional atmosphere, as well as perform on the same evening as professional company.

Evolve were also able to watch company class at Rhoda McGaw Theatre this afternoon, which was very inspiring for them. The action was improvised, fast, furious, high energy; if you’d like a glimpse Surrey TV captured some of the class; we will provide a link when it’s aired live at 6pm.
